Call for Chuck Schumer to Step Down as Senate Minority Leader
On March 14, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer failed to stand up against Donald Trump’s power grab. Instead of using the leverage Senate Democrats had, he acquiesced, paving the way for extreme funding cuts that benefit Trump and Elon Musk while hurting vital public programs. Many progressives believe that Schumer, while very experienced, does not possess the temperament and communication style needed for this moment.
The following day, Indivisible National polled over 1,000 group leaders and 91% voted to demand that Sen. Schumer be replaced as leader with a Senator who is willing and able to fight more powerfully and effectively against the Trump administration.
Indivisible issued this press release, and co-leaders Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg recommended that Indivisible groups across the country also ask their members if they would like to issue their own statements about whether Senate Democrats should replace Schumer as their leader.
Recently, Indivisible Mass Coalition asked its members to vote on whether IMC should formally call for Schumer to step aside as Senate minority leader. With 555 votes recorded, 84.3% voted yes, 12.4% voted no, and 4.3% abstained. While the results of the survey are clear, there were many in our community who admittedly supported Schumer's actions. For that perspective, here is a related opinion piece in support of Schumer's actions.
We recognize there are differing opinions regarding this issue. For those who wish to support Indivisible National’s position, click here for action instructions.
Call Senators Markey and Warren and urge them to insist on Schumer stepping down.
